Chunhyang Festival
About the Festival
The 96th Chunhyang Festival, boasting Korea's deepest history and tradition, will splendidly adorn Namwon's spring this April. The Chunhyang Festival is a traditional cultural festival that began in 1931 during the Japanese colonial period, initiated by Namwon citizens who voluntarily gathered to inspire national pride and commemorate the noble spirit of Seong Chunhyang. It is the genesis of performance art festivals in Korea and the nation's oldest historical asset, having breathed with its citizens for 96 years.Starting from a ritual commemorating 'Dano,' the day Chunhyang and Lee Mongryong first met, the festival is now evolving into a global cultural platform where people from all over the world can enjoy and communicate together, beyond Korea. This year's festival is particularly characterized by the harmonious blend of Gwanghalluwon Garden's tranquil scenery and modern light installations. During the day, it offers the dynamic excitement of traditional performances, and at night, it provides a lyrical ambiance under romantic starlight, delivering unforgettable impressions to visitors. The 96th Chunhyang Festival, unfolding in a space where the most Korean sentiments come alive, is a venue for harmony where tradition, modernity, and the world connect as one.
