About the Festival

Civilization on Jeju, a volcanic island on the Eurasian plate, flowed in from the sea and arrived from northern land civilizations. Various elements scattered and gathered in Jeju, mixing and transforming to create today's ecology, geography, and way of life. Marking its 10th year, the 5th Jeju Biennale focuses on the dynamic process of Jeju—meeting northern civilizations, scattering (Heukkeuda), gathering (Modakchida), and transforming (Iyahong). The Biennale uses "Iyahong," the refrain of the Iyahong Taryeong (a folk song that flowed from the mainland to become indigenous to Jeju), as its theme and core concept. Through Jeju, where the principles of climate and sustenance reside, the Jeju Biennale aims to present the survival methods and aesthetics co-created by objects, nature, human life, and divinity.
