Started in 1997 as the World Madang Theater Festival, the Gwacheon Festival of Performing Arts is Korea's first street theater festival. Held every September, it features high-quality performances centered on domestic and international outdoor and street theater. Serving as an experimental stage for artists from home and abroad, it provides a wealth of attractions including international, domestic, and specially planned performances, allowing citizens to enjoy diverse cultures freely. Attracting over 100,000 visitors annually, it has evolved into a representative festival of Asia and a citizen-led arts festival. Since 2023, it has been renamed the Gwacheon Festival of Performing Arts (GPAF), continuing as a plaza-focused performing arts festival together with the citizens.
