About the Festival

Hangeul is a script born out of consideration for people's hearts, connecting thoughts and meanings. It conveyed the hearts of the people who struggled to express themselves and was a hope that firmly protected the spirit of our nation even in dark history. Dobong-gu, Seoul, is a place where the breath of historical figures who created, protected, and enjoyed Hangeul dwells, including Princess Jeongui (daughter of King Sejong), Gansong Jeon Hyeong-pil and Widang Jeong In-bo who protected our language and script during the Japanese colonial period, and poet Kim Su-young who sang of freedom in Hangeul. 2026 is a meaningful year marking the 580th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunminjeongeum, as well as the 100th anniversary of the establishment of 'Hangeul Day' and the creation of 'Hunmaengjeongeum', our script for the visually impaired. Accordingly, the Dobong Cultural Center is holding the 15th Dobong Hangeul Festival "Breaking through the darkness, connecting hearts" to reflect on the heart for people contained in Hangeul and the will of those who protected Hangeul even in the darkness of the times. We aim to create a festival where the history of creating, protecting, and enjoying Hangeul is connected with the figures and cultural resources of Dobong, and shared with us today through exhibitions, performances, and experiences.
